Counsellor - Domestic & Family Violence

Job No: S3796
Location: Anglicare SQ - Mental Health & Wellbeing - Brisbane, QLD

About the Position

Anglicare SQ’s Mental Health & Wellbeing teams assist all kinds of people who may be struggling to overcome challenges, providing support in the home, workplace or community. The Living Without Violence service, designed by Ken McMasters, provides group work and individual counselling to men who have perpetrated domestic and family violence. Increasing the safety of affected family members, particularly women and children, through facilitating change and accountability with the man, is a priority. The wellbeing of all family members is an equal focus.

To support this program we are currently looking for a part time Counsellor - Domestic & Family Violence to act as a women’s advocate - to provide and/or coordinate the provision of advocacy; information, support, and referral services to survivors (primarily women and children) affected by the man’s violence. The Women’s Advocate is responsible for connecting with women who have experienced domestic violence, and while ensuring their safety is at the forefront of planning, complete risk assessments and referrals.

This role is largely phone based and will rely on strong communication skills. Our ideal applicant will be comfortable backfilling for group facilitation where required, and when it doesn’t cause a conflict of interest. Working throughout the greater Brisbane region, you will be flexible and comfortable working in a number of locations including Woolloongabba and Stafford. Some after hours and weekend work will also be required.

About You

With a collaborative and consultative approach, our successful candidate will be happy to roll up their sleeves and hit the ground running. You will offer a successful background in Social Services - specifically within domestic and family violence services, mental health or substance abuse.

Skills, attributes and capabilities will include:

  • Significant experience working with women and families who have experienced domestic and family violence
  • Capacity to effectively engage and work productively with challenging and complex clients, who may have been mandated, while providing advocacy for a group of violence-affected women
  • Demonstrated safety planning knowledge, skills and experience to ensure the wellbeing of women and families who have previously, or are currently experiencing DFV
  • Capacity to conduct risk assessments to keep the women safe and contribute to the men’s case plans; escalate to line managers where there is a high safety risk identified
  • Work collaboratively within a small team of diverse personalities and communication styles; an understanding of power dynamics and the need to model appropriate behaviour
  • A quick learner with an adaptable nature and the capacity to juggle changing priorities on any given day
  • Strong change management skills, with an understanding of individual and team impacts, and able to provide a positive focus on the future
  • Previous experience working within reflective and supervision frameworks and the capacity to promote these within the team
  • Being organised with good time management skills, as you will need to balance your own clinical workload while effectively maintaining management and administrative duties
  • Maturity and emotional resilience with the ability to self-care effectively
  • A calm, professional approach with the ability to use initiative & sound judgement in decision making
  • Be willing to work outside of standard business hours including weekends (rates apply as relevant)
  • Demonstrate a strong networking ability; work collaboratively with other stakeholders and service providers
  • Have a confident phone manner, be able to build rapport quickly and communicate effectively over the phone

Your official qualifications and certifications will include:

  • A relevant four-year degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or similar field
  • Post graduate qualifications would be advantageous
  • Membership of a relevant professional body or eligibility to apply
